Autumn 1 Newsletter

Dear parents and carers,

Welcome to Year 2! I hope you have all had a lovely summer. I am delighted to be teaching Year 2 this year. I have outlined key information for this half term, any questions please ask.

General Information

As with Year 1, our school day begins at 8:55 and we will start our day with phonics and literacy, with maths after playtime. The afternoons will be devoted to the wider curriculum. PE will commence from week 1 and will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please ensure your child has the appropriate kit in school for Thursday 12th September. Your child will be given a reading book on our first day back. Just a reminder that children should be reading every evening and be bringing their book in to be changed as soon as it is finished.

This half term, our topic will be ‘Wheels, Wings and Wonderful Things’. Children will learn all about transport linking to geography and history. They will learn about the work of George Stephenson, how transport has changed over time and develop their locational knowledge of the British Isles.

In literacy, we will begin by looking at non-fiction texts and write an information text about transport. We will then move onto descriptions, narratives and explore the work of Nick Sharratt. In maths, we will be looking at place value then move onto addition and subtraction. Science this half term will be on the properties of materials. Elena will take the class on Tuesday afternoons, teaching PE and RE.

This half term’s topic homework will be to research a famous transport or transport around the world. We will share our homework during the last 2 weeks of the half term.

Please continue to support your child with their reading. It is essential for your child’s progress in reading that they are reading every night. We are keen to develop a love of reading with the children so please let us know of any books the children are enjoying or any drawing or writing the children have done, associated with books they are reading, at home.

A key objective this year will be to tell the time to the nearest 5 minutes. Please support your child at home with telling the time.

This half term, our PE will be dance and football. Please ensure your child has appropriate PE kit in school for both an indoor and outdoor PE session. PE will be on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.

Any questions, please come and see me I will be happy to help.

Many Thanks

Miss Johnson
