Spring Bank Primary School

Summer Term 2 Newsletter

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope you are all enjoying the half term holiday. We have outlined some key information about Reception and the half term ahead, if you have any questions, please ask.

Staff in Reception:

  • Mrs Ryan, Reception Class Teacher (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday).
  • Mrs McAdam, Reception Class Teacher (Thursday and Friday). Mrs Ryan will be in school but non-class based allowing time for her Early Years Lead and SENDCo roles.
  • Miss Duly, full time Teaching Assistant (Monday-Friday).

As you are aware Mrs Ryan is getting closer and closer to her due date, she is due on Saturday 15th June. Mrs Ryan plans to be in school until Friday 14th June, Mrs Ryan will be in class on Friday 14th June to spend her last working day with your children. Of course if the baby arrives early, Mrs Ryan will not be in school. Mrs Ryan hopes to come in and visit with her new baby before the academic year ends. We will keep you updated.

As of Monday 17th June, Mrs McAdam will be in school full time until the end of the academic year.

Play and Learn

There will be no Play and Learn sessions this half term. This is to help support your child with the transition into Year 1. As Year 1 do not have Play and Learn sessions. Thank you to all parents who have attended Play and Learn sessions throughout the year.

School Trips

Please keep a look out for further information regarding our upcoming school trips to Temple Newsam House on Thursday 6th June and to Headingley library on Tuesday 23rd July.

Transition into Year 1

Your child will spend 2 afternoons in Year 1 during the week beginning 15th July. They will be split into 2 groups for transition. The whole class will also spend a morning session in Year 1 during this week.

Teddy Bear End of Year Picnic

You are invited to join Reception on Monday 22nd July for an end of year picnic, 12:10-1:10pm. This is a chance for parents, carers, Reception staff and children to chat and celebrate the amazing year we have had in Reception. Younger siblings are welcome, we will also invite any siblings in school to come along if they would like to, they can attend once they have had their lunch in the school hall or they can come and have lunch with us! Lunch will be provided by school for children in Reception. Please bring your own lunch, snacks and treats for yourself and for any younger siblings who attend. Please bring picnic blankets. Keep a look out for more information nearer the time.

Morning Drop off

Thank you to everyone who has really tried to drop their children off at the main door.

Please encourage your child to come into class (the cloakroom) by themselves, please refrain from coming into the cloakroom, please say your good byes at the main Reception door and do not come into the class or into the cloakroom at all. We appreciate this may be difficult but this will really support your child in getting ready for Year 1. If your child can come into school independently, it will make their transition into Year 1 every morning much smoother and relaxed.

Outdoor Area

Please ensure that you close the gates as you leave and/or enter the area. We will open the main gate at 8:55am, please refrain from using the side gate, this is for access to breakfast club only. If the Reception gates are closed please refrain from coming into the Reception outdoor area. This is for health and safety reasons. At home time, please ensure that your child does not use the Reception area to play in and that you have left the Reception area by 3:40pm. Thank you.

Warmer Weather

As the weather is improving (hopefully) please provide a named water bottle for your child, this will allow your child to independently access water throughout the day ensuring that they are hydrated. Only water can be brought into school, no other drinks. This is school policy. They will need to take this home at the end of each day for it to be washed and refilled.

You may also wish to provide a sunhat/cap for your child. Please make sure this is named. On particularly sunny days you may want to put sun cream on your child, this is something that we are unable to do in school.

If your child is now 5 years old, you will be sent a letter asking if you would like to pay £4 a term for your child to continue having milk every day at school. If you do not want your child to have milk for any reason or you would like to find out if your child is drinking milk during the school day, please ask. Children are able to have their milk at any point in the day, they are encouraged to drink it in the morning.

Children in Reception are entitled to one piece of fresh fruit or vegetable everyday as part of the School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme. There is a choice of bananas, apples, pears, carrots, raisins, tomatoes, satsumas and we may even now get some strawberries!  Your child will be able to have their snack at any point in the day. There is no need for you to provide any snacks for your child.

Circle Time

We will be reflecting on the year we have had in Reception, how we have changed and grown, as well as focusing on our plans, activities and goals for the future. We will also be sharing our worries and hopes for Year 1 and how we can make the transition as smooth and relaxed as possible.

We will be revisiting EVERYTHING! Just to make sure we are ready for Year 1.

Phonics, reading books and library visits

This half term we will complete the final section of Stage 3 of Floppy Phonics. Once we have learnt all the sounds, we will recap all the sounds we have learnt throughout the whole year!

Please continue to read with your child every day and practise their new sounds. Remember to write in their reading journal once you have read with your child, we can then change their book.

We will continue to visit the school library on a Monday. Your child can keep this book for as long as they wish, once returned, they can take a new book home. These books will go home in book bags and can be returned by being put back into book bags. Please use your child’s reading record to let us know if you have finished the library book. We recommend that you keep a library book for no longer than 2 weeks.

Book Bags

  • Please ensure that your child brings their book bag to school every day.
  • Please ensure that your child’s reading book and reading log are in their book bag every day, as we will be reading with your child in school also. We cannot do this if they do not bring their book bag in or if one of the books are missing.
  • Please ensure that the only things in your child’s book bag are their reading book, reading log and library book, nothing else.
  • Please ensure that your child only has one keyring on their book bag, please encourage them to select a small keyring.

PE will continue to be on a Wednesday afternoon. We will start PE lessons on Wednesday 5th June. During our PE lessons we will be preparing for Health and Sports week, this will include moving a mile around school, basketball shooting, javelin, long jump, relay races and the famous egg and spoon race! We will continue to learn about the effects that exercise and being active has on our bodies and how to make healthy food choices. We will also be practising buttoning and tying laces, please support your child with this at home.

PE Kit is compulsory at Spring Bank Primary School. Your child will not be able to take part in PE lessons if they do not have a complete PE Kit. Please ensure your child has a complete PE kit in school at all times (White t-shirt, dark blue/black shorts, socks, trainers, optional: Dark blue/black joggers and a dark blue/black hoodie). You can buy PE kit at the main school office.

  • Please ensure that your child wears clothes that are easy for to take off and put on independently (no buttons at the back).
  • Please ensure that if your child wears tights or sandals (no socks) to school that they also have a pair of socks in their PE kit.
  • For children with long hair, please ensure that your child’s hair is tied up on a Wednesday.
  • Please ensure that your child has no jewellery on, only stud earrings.
  • Please encourage your child to get dressed/undressed at home independently as this will support them when getting ready for PE.
  • Please do not send your child to school in their PE kit, part of our PE lessons, is getting changed.
  • Please leave your child’s PE kit in school on their peg. You only need to take PE kits home when we break up for the holidays.
  • Please ensure that all belongings are clearly named – If you are missing any clothes, please check the pink lost property bin.
