I hope you are all enjoying the Easter holidays, and ensuring that you and your children are getting a well-deserved rest before we start back for our third and final term in Reception! We have outlined some key information about Reception and the half term ahead, if you have any questions, please ask.

Staff in Reception:

  • Mrs Ryan, Reception Class Teacher (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday).
  • Mrs McAdam, Reception Class Teacher (Thursday and Friday). I will still be in school but will be non-class based to allow time for my roles as Early Years Lead and school SENDCo.
  • Miss Duly, full time Teaching Assistant (Monday-Friday).

Circle Time: We will be focusing on how to work as a team, take turns and follow rules, as well as thinking about how to take responsibility for our actions including taking care of the world we live in.

Phonics: This half term we will complete Stage 3 of Floppy Phonics. We will continue to send home phonics challenges so you can see how your child is doing in school, as well as being able to support your child with alternative ways of learning the sounds through different home challenges. All challenges are for you to complete and practise with your child at home, you do not need to return them to school.

Thank you to those parents who attended the phonics parents evening earlier in this year, hope it was helpful. We will have our third and final phonics evening on Thursday 18th April, thank you to all of you who have confirmed if you can attend or not. This workshop will introduce you to the sounds in the final Phonics Stage 3 for Reception, it will also provide you with the opportunity to ask any questions you may have and to talk to other parents and share ideas on how you can support your children at home.

Reading Books: We will continue to send reading books home, book bags are checked at lunchtime. Your child will receive a reading book as soon as they have read the previous book sent home.

Things to note:

  • Please read with your child as often as possible, ideally every day.
  • You do not need to read the whole book in one sitting.
  • Please sign/initial or comment in your child’s reading record to indicate if you have read the whole book, we can then provide a new book. If you are in the middle of a book, please indicate which page number you have reached.
  • We will not change your child’s book unless you indicate that they have read the original book given.
  • Please be aware that your child may receive the same book more than once, this is to support them in terms of revision, fluency and understanding.
  • Please be aware that your child may receive what appears to be a ‘too easy’ book, however this is again to support your child in terms of revision, fluency and understanding.
  • Please ensure that your child’s reading book and reading log are in their book bag every day, as we will be reading with your child in school also. We cannot do this if they do not bring their book bag in or if one of the books are missing.
  • Please ensure that your child brings their book bag to school every day.
  • Please ensure that the only things in your child’s book bag is their reading book, reading log and library book, nothing else.
  • Please ensure that your child only has one keyring on their book bag, please encourage them to select a small keyring.

Library: On a Monday your child will visit the school library, they will choose a story book for you to read together. Your child can keep this book for as long as they wish, once returned, they can take a new book home. These books will go home in book bags and can be returned by being put back into book bags. Please use your child’s reading record to let us know if you have finished the library book. We recommend that you keep a library book for no longer than 2 weeks.

Maths: We will finding out all about number 10 this half term. We will use all our knowledge of the previous numbers to help support our learning and to further deepen our knowledge of numbers. We will be making sure that we are secure in our knowledge of numbers within 20, as well as working on our addition and subtraction skills to help us work on our number bonds to 5 and 10, doubling, halving and sharing. We will also start counting aloud in 2’s to 20, in 5’s to 50 and in 10’s to 100! We will use our counting to support our grouping in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.

PE: PE will continue to be on a Wednesday afternoon. We will start PE lessons on Wednesday 24th March. Please ensure your child has a complete PE kit in school at all times. PE Kit is compulsory at Spring Bank Primary School. Please leave your child’s PE kit in school on their peg. You only need to take PE kits home when we break up for the holidays.

Compulsory PE KIT: Dark blue/black shorts, white t-shirt and trainers. When the weather gets colder you may like to also include dark blue/black jogging bottoms, and a dark blue/black hoodie. You can buy PE kit at the main school office. Your child will not be able to take part in PE lessons if they do not have a complete PE Kit.

Please ensure that if your child wears tights to school that they also have a pair of socks in their PE kit. For children with long hair, please ensure that your child’s hair is tied up on a Wednesday morning. Please ensure that your child has no jewellery on, only stud earrings. If you have any questions or issues please ask. Please ensure that all belongings are clearly named.

During our PE lessons we will be preparing for Health and Sports week, this will include moving a mile around school, basketball shooting, javelin, long jump, relay races and the famous egg and spoon race! We will continue to learn about the effects that exercise and being active has on our bodies and how to make healthy food choices. We will also be practising buttoning and tying laces, please support your child with this at home.

Extra Clothing: Although we are now well into Spring, it is possible that there may still be some wet and chilly days. You may want to leave a pair of wellies and a raincoat in school for your child. You may even want to provide a full set of spare clothes (including underwear, socks and shoes) in case of accidents or very messy play! Please ensure that all belongings are clearly named. Clothes can very easily get misplaced or lost in a class of 30 children!

Water bottles: Please provide a named water bottle for your child, this will allow your child to independently access water throughout the day ensuring that they are hydrated. Only water can be brought into school, no other drinks. This is school policy.

Milk: If your child is now 5 years old, you will be sent a letter asking if you would like to pay £4 a term for your child to continue having milk every day at school. If you do not want your child to have milk for any reason or you would like to speak to us about if you should pay for your child to have milk, please come and ask. Children are able to have their milk at any point in the day, they are encouraged to drink it in the morning.

Snacks: Children in Reception are entitled to one piece of fresh fruit or vegetable everyday as part of the School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme. There is a choice of bananas, apples, pears, carrots, raisins, tomatoes, satsumas and strawberries in the summer! Your child will be able to have their snack at any point in the day. There is no need for you to provide any snacks for your child.

Reception Assembly: You are invited to attend Celebration Assembly on Friday 26th April. After assembly we will be looking at how we can enthuse our children in reading. We look forward to seeing lots of you there.

 Play and Learn: You are invited to join in with our learning activities and to explore our learning environments both inside and out. Play and Learn will start on Friday 3rd May at 2:30-3:25pm, and will continue to be on each Friday unless stated otherwise. Our last play and learn for the year will be on Friday 24th May. This is to help to support your child with the transition into Year 1, as no weekly Play and Learn sessions take place. These sessions will run every week, if a session is cancelled we will let you know. Please arrive at school at the main entrance, you will be asked to sign in and then be directed to the Reception classroom. Please be aware that your child will still go home at the usual time of 3:25pm. We cannot allow children to leave early. We will have a whole class picnic at the end of the year, where we can all come together to reflect and celebrate your child’s year in Reception.

Visitors: I will be collecting our chick eggs on Thursday 18th April as part of our growing project this half term. Reception will be learning all about how to nurture them and look after the chicks once they have hatched. As well as this, we will also have some caterpillars in class, which we will look after until they become butterflies. Thank you for everyone who supported the cake sale, without these donations we could not have bought the chick eggs or caterpillars.

School Trips: Please keep a look out for information regarding our school trip to Temple Newsam House on Thursday 6th June.

Morning Drop off: Thank you to everyone who has really tried to drop their children off at the main door. As we are becoming increasingly closer to the end of this academic year, you will hear us talking more and more about the transition into Year 1. Whilst it still may feel too soon to think about moving into Year 1, it is now only one term away, and we want to ensure a smooth transition. As part of this we will be asking that you say good bye to child at the main Reception door and do not come into the class or into the cloakroom at all. We appreciate this may be difficult but this will really support your child in getting ready for Year 1.

Outdoor Area: Thank you to everyone who has refrained from entering the outdoor area on a morning. Please ensure that close the gates as you leave and/or enter the area. We will open the main gate at 8:55am, please refrain from using the side gate, this is for access to breakfast club only. If the Reception gates are closed please refrain from coming into the Reception outdoor area. This is for health and safety reasons. At home time, please ensure that your child does not use the Reception area to play in and that you have left the Reception area by 3:40pm. Thank you.
