As part of our Into the Freezer topic Year 1 have been looking at the weather in England.

We decided to collect data on how windy is was around the school. We had to find out where the windiest place in school was. The children decided that the pitch and on the roof were the windiest places.

It was a stuggle trying to balance our clipboards.

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back and Happy New Year! We hope that you had a wonderful break. Here is some information you may find useful and an overview of the learning that will be taking place this half term.

PE

PE is on Thursday and Friday.

Please ensure your child has a full PE kit in school (white t-shirt, dark shorts and trainers). It is also really helpful if these items are labelled with your child’s name! Please can children leave their kits in school at all times, as sometimes the timetable can change.

Reading Books

Please try to listen to your child read every day and sign or tick their reading record book, showing that it had been read.

Our class library day is Monday when children may select a book at lunchtime to take home from the library.

Topic

This half term our topic is ‘Into the Freezer’.

Science – we will be looking at the seasons. How the weather is different in each season and how the day length changes according to the time of year.

Geography – we will be using maps and globes to look at the world. We will focus on being able to name the 7 continents and the oceans and be able to show where they are. We will be focusing on the cold areas of the world and exploring what it is like to live in Antarctica. We will also be collecting weather data and comparing it with Antarctica.

Art / DT – towards the end of the topic the children will design a moving picture that uses cold colours.

PE – Thursday – dance linked to topic.

Friday – invasion games, learning rugby skills. How to catch and pass a ball and to     work as a team member.

Music – we will be looking at music linked to weather, the seasons and the Chinese New Year.

RE and Computing will be taught on a Wednesday by Mrs Birdi. They will be looking at how to use data on the computer in computing and ‘Why we care for people’ in RE.

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back! We hope that you had a wonderful break, the children have really settled into Year 1 now and we are proud of what they have done so far. Here is some information you may find useful and an overview of the learning that will be taking place this year.

Please try to listen to your child read every day and sign their reading record book, showing that it had been read. When your child needs a new book they should put their book bag in the box in the classroom when they come in at start of the day and it will be changed.

Our class library day is Monday when children may select a book at lunchtime to take home from the library.

Mornings

In Year 1 and 2 the doors open at 8.55. In order to encourage the children to become more independent and to avoid congestion, we would ask that parents/carers do not come into the cloakroom unless you need to speak to a member of staff. Thank you.

Topic

We are looking at toys in the past this half term. To help the children explore and understand the topic further we would like to collect a bank of toys that the children, you or your parents (grandparents) used to play with as children. Photographs of the children and yourselves with favourite toys would be helpful.

Now that the children have settled into the class we will be setting homework. Homework is set throughout the school half termly. They will have a few weeks to complete the project and can complete it in any way they like. Ways of presenting their work is:

  • Through writing
  • Photographs
  • Art work
  • Sculptures
  • Anything that inspires their creative side.
  • Project
  • This half term we are looking at toys in the past. Can the children find out what toys were like in the past?
  • Abacus

Last half term we introduced the children to Abacus Maths. We use this maths scheme in school and each of the children have their own maths page. On here we can set maths challenges to be completed at home. These are games that will help the children apply and practice the knowledge we have looked at in school. We sent their log in details home on a bookmark before the holidays. But if you need the details again please come and ask.

We are looking forward to a great year. If you have any questions please come and ask us.

Please try to listen to your child read every day and sign their reading record book. When your child needs a new book they should put their book bag in the box in the classroom when they come in at start of the day and it will be changed. We will remind the children about this system over the next few weeks.

In addition, we will hear the children read in group guided reading sessions at least once a week with books and questions matched to the abilities of each group.

Our class library day is Monday when children may select a book at lunchtime to take home from the library.

End of the day

Please can you inform a member of Year 1 staff if your child is going home with someone other than yourself, for easier transition at the end of the day.
