Spring Bank Primary School

Year 1 Category

This week we have been learning about Autumn. We have looked at the weather, animals, celebrations and the months in Autumn.

We also went on a walk around the school to see if we could ‘find’ Autumn. The children used the iPads to take photographs. Here are some of the photographs they took.

Wednesday 1st November 2017

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back! We hope that you had a wonderful break, the children have really settled into Year 1 now and we are proud of what they have done so far. Here is some information you may find useful and an overview of the learning that will be taking place this half term.

PE

PE is on Thursday and Friday.

Please ensure your child has a full PE kit in school (white t-shirt, dark shorts and trainers). It is also really helpful if these items are labelled with your child’s name! Please can children leave their kits in school at all times, as sometimes the timetable can change.

Reading Books

Please try to listen to your child read every day and sign their reading record book, showing that it had been read, this doesn’t have to be a comment. When your child needs a new book they should put their book bag in the box in the classroom when they come in at start of the day and it will be changed.

Our class library day is Monday when children may select a book at lunchtime to take home from the library.

Topic

This half term out topic is ‘Let’s Play. We will be looking at the differences between toys in the past and toys that children have today. Looking at the materials that they are made from and why. We will also discuss what our favourite toys are. To help the children explore and understand the topic further we would like to collect a bank of toys that the children play with now and also toys that you or your parents (grandparents) used to play with as children. Photographs of the children and yourselves with favourite toys would be helpful. The children will also be producing a piece of work about what their parents or grandparents used to play with so it would be very helpful if you could have a chat over the next couple of weeks about this. Thank you.

Now that the children have settled into the class we will be setting homework. Homework is set throughout the school half termly. They will have a few weeks to complete the project and can complete it in any way they like. Ways of presenting their work is:

  • Through writing
  • Photographs
  • Art work
  • Sculptures
  • Anything that inspires their creative side.Project This week the children have been introduced to the Abacus website. On this site the children can access maths games. The games have levels (bronze, silver and gold). It will help to develop their maths knowledge and skills. We will add games to their account as and when we feel that the children need more time on a particular area. We will be sending out their login names and passwords in the next couple of weeks. We will also let you know when more homework has been added.
  • Abacus
  • This half term we are looking at toys in the past. Can the children find out what toys were like in the past? The deadline for homework to be handed in is Friday 1st December.
  •

We are looking forward to a great year. If you have any questions please come and ask us.

Yours Faithfully,

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome to Year 1! We hope that you had a wonderful break, the children have had a great start to the year and are settling in really well. Here is some information you may find useful and an overview of the learning that will be taking place this year.

PE

PE is on Thursday and Friday.

Please ensure your child has a full PE kit in school (white t-shirt, dark shorts and trainers). It is also really helpful if these items are labelled with your child’s name!

Reading Books

Please try to listen to your child read every day and sign their reading record book. When your child needs a new book they should put their book bag in the box in the classroom when they come in at start of the day and it will be changed. We will remind the children about this system over the next few weeks.

In addition, we will hear the children read in group guided reading sessions at least once a week with books and questions matched to the abilities of each group.

Our class library day is Monday when children may select a book at lunchtime to take home from the library.

Mornings

In Year 1 and 2 the doors open at 8.55. In order to encourage the children to become more independent and to avoid congestion, we would ask that parents/carers do not come into the cloakroom unless you need to speak to a member of staff. Thank you.

End of the day

Please inform a member of Year 1 staff if your child is going home with someone other than yourself, for easier transition at the end of the day.

Topic

This half term our topic is Doctor, Doctor! We will be learning about ourselves and our 5 senses. We will also find out about Mary Seacole and why she is a person of interest from the past. At the end of the half term we will be designing and making our own fruit salads, yum!

Autumn Term 1

From now until Christmas we will have a trainee teacher in our class, Miss Best. Miss Best will be working with the children in small groups during this half term and will then progress to teaching whole class lessons.

If you have any questions please come and ask any of the Year 1 staff. We are looking forward to a fun year!

Yours Faithfully,

Caroline Mitchell
