Spring Bank Primary School

Reception Newsletter Autumn 1

Welcome to Reception! We hope you had a lovely summer and are ready for your child’s first year at Spring Bank Primary School. We have had a fantastic first full week with all 30 children in class. Thank you for all your hard work and support in preparing your child for school.

This year in Reception working with your children will be:

  • Mrs Ryan, me, Reception Class Teacher on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
  • Mrs McAdam, Reception Class Teacher on a Thursday and Friday. I will still be in school but I will have time out of class to be able to complete my responsibilities as lead of Early Years and as school SENDCo.
  • Miss Duly, Full time Teaching Assistant.
  • Miss Chudzik, additional support on a Monday and Tuesday morning.

This half term we will be learning about ourselves and others, focusing on becoming independent and expressing our feelings and emotions. You can help your child by encouraging them to get ready in the morning independently, carrying their own book bag, water bottle etc. to school, finding their own peg and putting their own belongings away at the start of the day (they are already very good at this!).

Phonics

We have already started learning phonics in class, we will learn two new sounds a week. A phonics challenge will be sent home on Tuesday and Thursday for you to complete and practise with your child at home.

On Thursday 27th September, 6pm we will be holding a Phonics meeting for parents. Please come along to find out how your child is learning phonics and to ask any questions you may have. There will be an additional letter in regards to this.

Book Bags

Thank you to all of you who have already purchased a book bag for their child. Book bags can be purchased for £5 at the main school office.

Reading Books

Your child will receive a reading book as soon as they have read the previous book sent home. Please read with your child as often as possible, ideally every day. You do not need to read the whole book in one sitting. Please sign or comment in your child’s reading record, as this will indicate if we need to give your child a new book or not and will help us to see that your child is reading at home. We will not change your child’s book unless you indicate that they have read the original book given. Please be aware that your child may receive the same book more than once, this is to support them in terms of revision and fluency. Please ask if you have any questions in relation to this process.

Library

On a Monday your child will visit the library, they will choose a story book for you to read together. Your child can keep this book for as long as they wish, once returned to the library, they can take a new book home. These books will go home in book bags and can be returned by be put back into book bags. Please use your child’s reading record to let us know if you have finished with the library book.

Maths

We will be focusing on numbers 1-5 this term. We will be really looking at the numberness of each number and finding out everything there is to know about each number. We will also be practising counting and making sure that we don’t miss out any numbers and that we count accurately when counting amounts. Keep a look out for maths challenges throughout the year for you and your child to explore outside of school!

Circle Time

All children will take part in circle time on a Friday afternoon with Mrs McAdam, we will focus on:

  • Getting to know one another.
  • Understanding how to share and take turns.
  • Discussing the Superhero Rules and learning why they are important.
  • Learning about our emotions and feelings, how to recognise them, how to cope with them and how to share them.
  • Becoming confident to share our thoughts, feelings and ideas with others.

PE

We will be starting PE on Wednesday 26th September. Please ensure your child has a complete PE kit in school at all times. PE Kit is compulsory at Spring Bank Primary School. Please leave your child’s PE kit in school on their peg. You only need to take PE kits home when we break up for the holidays.

Compulsory PE KIT: Dark blue/black shorts, white t-shirt and trainers. When the weather gets colder you may like to also include dark blue/black jogging bottoms, and a dark blue/black hoodie. You can buy PE kit at the main school office.

Your child will not be able to take part in PE lessons if they do not have a complete PE Kit.

Please ensure that if your child wears tights to school that they also have a pair of socks in their PE kit. For children with long hair, please ensure that your child’s hair is tied up on a Wednesday morning. Please ensure that your child has no jewellery on, only stud earrings.

If you have any questions or issues please ask.

Extra Clothing

In preparation for the wet weather, you may also want to leave a pair of wellies and a raincoat in school for your child. You may even want to provide a full set of spare clothes (including underwear, socks and shoes) in case of accidents or very messy play!

Please ensure that all belongings are clearly named. Clothes can very easily get misplaced or lost in a class of 30 children!

Water bottles

Please provide a named water bottle for your child, this will allow your child to independently access water throughout the day ensuring that they are hydrated.

Only water can be brought into school, no other drinks.

Milk

For the first term in Reception all children are entitled to free milk every day. Your child will be able to have their milk at any point in the day, preferably in the morning. After Christmas in the term your child turns 5, you will be sent a letter asking if you would like to pay £4 a term for your child to continue having milk every day at school. If you do not want your child to have milk for any reason please let us know.

Snacks

Children in Reception are entitled to one piece of fresh fruit or vegetable everyday as part of the School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme. There is a choice of bananas, apples, pears, carrots, raisins, tomatoes, satsumas and strawberries in the summer! Your child will be able to have their snack at any point in the day. There is no need for you to provide any snacks for your child.

Play and Learn

We will start Play and Learn sessions on Monday 22nd October, 9am-10am. You are invited to join in with our learning activities and to explore our learning environments both inside and out. We will run these sessions every week on a Monday from now until June. If a session is cancelled we will let you know.

Outdoor Area

Please refrain from entering the outdoor area on a morning. We will come out and open the gate and welcome you and your child into class at 8:50am. If the Reception gates are closed please refrain from coming into the Reception outdoor area. This is for health and safety reasons but also because we will soon be hiding things in our outdoor area ready for ‘treasure hunts’ during our morning lessons. We would like to keep the ‘treasure’ hidden so that your child can discover it for themselves during their learning time. Also at home time, if you could please ensure that your children do not use the Reception area to play in, this is again for health and safety reasons and also because we have packed away for the day. Please ensure that you have left the Reception area by 3:40pm.

Availability

All members of the Reception team are always available and happy to answer any questions or queries you may have. Please do not hesitate to talk to us. If it is easier you can also email n.hussain@springbankprimary.org (That’s my email address, it is still in my maiden name).

Thank you for all your support so far. We are all very excited about getting to know you and your children.
