Reception Summer 1 Newsletter

Summer 1 2018

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope you are all enjoying the Easter holidays, here is some general information about Reception and an overview of the learning we will be doing for the first half of the summer term.

Staff in Reception this half term

  • Mrs Ryan, Reception Class Teacher.
  • Marcella, Full time Teaching Assistant.
  • Miss Milburn, Learning Mentor (All day Tuesday and Thursday, plus Friday morning).
  • Miss Luney, Trainee Teacher.

Phase 3 sounds this half term –

digraphs (2 letters than make one sound): oa, oo, oo, ar, or, ur, ow, oi.

trigraphs (3 letters that make one sound): igh, ear, air, ure.

We will continue to practise reading some common exception words – I, go, to, the, no, a, into, you, me, he, she, we, be, they, was, all, have, come, some, do, so, have, like, little, one, out, said, there, were, what, when.

Thank you to all those parents who have attended the phonics evenings throughout the year. Please continue to read with your child every day and practise their new sounds. Remember to write in their reading journal once you have read with your child, we can then change their book. We will continue to visit the school library on a Friday.

Circle Time

We will be focusing on how to work as a team, take turns and follow rules, as well as thinking about how to take responsibility for our actions including taking care of the world we live in.

We will be focusing on counting reliably to 20 in 1’s and ordering numbers 1-20. As well as counting aloud in 2’s to 20, in 5’s to 50 and in 10’s to 100! We will use our counting to support our grouping in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. We will also be working on number bonds to 5 and 10, recapping doubling, halving and sharing. We will also squeeze in some work on 3D shape characteristics, capacity and O’clock time!

PE lessons will start on Wednesday 18th April. We will be having PE lessons outside (weather dependent), please ensure that your child has a pair of trainers and socks in their PE kit.

Please make sure your child has a full PE kit in school at all times (white t-shirt, dark blue/black shorts, socks, trainers. Optional: Dark blue/black joggers and hoodies). Without a PE kit your child will not be able to take part in PE.

Please make sure all clothes are named, including the clothes that your child wears on a Wednesday. It is very difficult for us to keep track of 30 PE kits and 30 outfits when they are not named.

If you are missing any clothes from before the holidays, please check the pink lost property bin, we have only kept clothes that were named in the cloak room.

Please make sure that your child wears clothes that are easy for them to take off and put on independently (no buttons at the back). Please encourage your child to get dressed/undressed at home independently as this will support them when getting ready for PE. Children with long hair should come to school with their hair tied up on a Wednesday.

During our PE lessons we will be preparing for Health and Sports week, this will include moving a mile around school, basketball shooting, javelin, long jump, relay races and the famous egg and spoon race! We will continue to learn about the effects that exercise and being active has on our bodies and how to make healthy food choices. We will also be practising buttoning and tying laces, please support your child with this at home.

Play and Learn

Will start on Monday 23rd April at 9am. The session will now finish at the earlier time of 9:45am, this is because Reception will now be attending assembly on a Monday, and so we will need to start phonics earlier. This is also a good way to start the transition process in preparation for Year 1.

Our last play and learn will be on Monday 21st May. We will have a whole class picnic at the end of the year, where we can all come together to reflect and celebrate your child’s year in Reception.

Visitors and School Trips

I will be collecting our chick eggs on Tuesday 17th April as part of our growing project this half term. Reception will be learning all about how to nurture them and look after the chicks once they have hatched. As well as this, we will also be going on a school trip to Meanwood Valley Farm on Friday 27th April. Please keep a look out for more detailed information.

Next week you will be able to see that during the holidays we have been very lucky in Reception and the team at Holly Bush have been working very hard to get our climbing equipment installed. We are very grateful to the PTA and school for helping fundraise to raise the money for this equipment.

We still need to raise some money for this so Reception would like to have a Fun Day Bun Day on Thursday 24th May after school, 3:25pm. We would be very grateful for any cakes, buns, biscuits you wish to make/buy and bring in on the morning of Thursday 24th May so we can sell them at the end of the day. We are also hoping to have a fun activity for you to join in with and raise some extra funds whilst having fun, but Reception haven’t quite decided on what the activity will be just yet.

Finally if you have any questions I am always happy to have a brief chat after school. If you need longer, please arrange a time with me so we can discuss things fully. My email address is n.hussain@springbankprimary.org

Thank you for your continued support.
