Reception Newsletter Spring 1

Spring 1 2018

Dear Parents and Carers,

Happy New Year! I hope you all enjoyed the winter break and are settling back into the routines of school life. Here is some general information about Reception and an overview of the learning we will be doing this half term.

Staff in Reception this half term

  • Mrs Ryan, Reception Class Teacher.
  • Marcella, Full time Teaching Assistant.
  • Miss Milburn, Learning Mentor (Tuesday and Thursday all day and Friday morning).
  • Miss Luney, Student Teacher.

Phase 2 sounds this half term – j, v, w, x, y, z, zz, qu, ch, sh. (digraphs: 2 letters that make one sound).

We will also be learning how to read some common exception words – I, go, to, the, no, into, are, they, my, was, her, he, she, we, me, be, you.

Please continue to read with your child every day and practise their new sounds. Remember to write in their reading journal so we can change their book. We will continue to visit the school library on a Friday.

There will be a phonics ‘parent’ lesson on Monday 8th January, 6pm. Thank you to all those who attended the previous phonics evening. I look forward to seeing you all again. This session will introduce you to Phase 2 and provide you with the opportunity to really put yourself in your child’s ‘learning’ shoes. I will also provide your child’s assessment of phases 1, so you can practise the sounds they find tricky at home.

Circle Time

We will be focusing on making goals and plans, understanding that some behaviours are unacceptable and have consequences, and learning how we can show sensitivity to other people’s needs and feelings.

We will be focusing on counting on to 20 and back from 20, as well as counting on and back from any given number within 20. We will be learning that numbers beyond 10 are combined by more than one digit, as well as focusing on number facts to 5, doubling, halving, and measuring height, weight, length and time.

PE lessons will start on Wednesday 10th January.

We will continue our work on the gym apparatus, helping us to learn how to keep safe and assess risks. We will continue to learn about the effects that exercise and being active has on our bodies and how to make healthy choices.

Please make sure your child has a full PE kit in school at all times (white t-shirt and dark shorts, socks, trainers). Please make sure that all items are named. Without a PE kit your child will not be able to take part in PE.

Please make sure that your wears clothes that are easy for them to take off and put on independently (no buttons or clothes that fasten at the back). Children with long hair should come to school with their hair tied up.

Play and Learn

Will start on Monday 8th January, 9-10am and will run every Monday.

A gentle reminder

Please refrain from entering the Reception outdoor area on a morning. We will open the main door and gate at 8:55am. These will close no later than 9:05am.

We will be going to Pizza Express on Tuesday 6th March, this will be a morning only trip. We will walk to Pizza Express, make our own pizza, walk back to school and eat our pizza for lunch! More information regarding the trip will be provided nearer the time.

On Friday 2nd February we will be fundraising for Muscular Dystrophy. We would like all children to come to school wearing something orange and to donate a £1. More information will be sent regarding this fundraiser nearer the time.

Finally if you have any questions I am always happy to have a brief chat after school. If you need longer, please arrange a time with me so we can discuss things fully. My email address is n.hussain@springbankprimary.org

Thank you for your continued support.

Mrs Ryan
